What did Jesus say?
Unlike the established religious leaders of the day, Jesus made it clear that his minstry was for all people. He spent time with groups of people that many religious leaders neglected: the tax collector; the leper; the imprisoned; the poor; the prostitute; the foreigners; the beggar; the disabled; the naked; the sick; all the people on the outskirts of society. These people were referred to as sinners and the religious leaders said they were distanced from God. These people, Jesus chose to live and die amongst. Jesus outlined the purpose of his ministry and Luke (disciple and doctor) wrote it down; The Spirit of God is upon me, because God has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the outcasts. God has sent me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to those who cannot see, to set free those who are downtrodden and proclaim the time of God's acceptance of all people. (Luke 4:18-19) What does this tell us about the likely attitude of Jesus to lesbians, gays bisexuals and transgendered people today? What did Jesus say about same-sex love? The gospels give us a rich tapestry of guidance for living our lives that is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago. However, Jesus never spoke about same-sex relationships (along with many other subjects He never talked about). In the book Steps to Recovery from Bible Abuse, Dr. Rembert Truluck tells Sherry's story. Sherry has been in a loving, committed relationship with her lover for seven years. Sherry is a Christian and has suffered greatly from rejection from her Christian family. Searching for help, Sherry read carefully all the words of Jesus that had been printed in her Bible that her grandmother had given her some years before. She told her grandmother, "I real all the words of Jesus in the Bible you gave me and not one word of Jesus condemned me for being lesbian or for living with Carla." Surely if Jesus had issues with our community He would have taught about this in his teachings? |
